In the 1980s and 1990s, a weaker team playing at home in the NBA playoffs won 65–66% of those games, and by the late 1990s the weaker team at home was winning more often than the stronger team was in its own building. Today that number is 49%. Home court used to compensate for being outmatched. It no longer does. This series examines the last 40 years of the NBA to answer some basic questions about home court advantage. Has home court advantage really changed? What factors create the advantage? What drove the decline? And what did not?
Yes: the home team’s win rate has fallen. The decline is mostly slow and steady, with two small moments that stand out along the way. Home teams have historically shot better, pulled down more rebounds, committed fewer turnovers, and gotten the benefit of the doubt from the referees, and those four differences account for about 95% of the advantage. Two real-world changes stand out: the shift to three-point shooting (which alone reaches close to half) and a home whistle that measurably evened out. And the biggest single driver of the decline in the box scores, rebounding, is the largest piece neither change explains: the data can measure it but not say why the rebounding advantage faded. The usual suspects mostly miss, too: crowd size, travel, and rest each turn out too small or too steady to bend a 40-year trend.
1. Yes, It Really Changed

Forty years ago, home teams won about 65% of regular-season games and about 68% in the playoffs. Today it’s about 55% and 58%, a drop of roughly 10 percentage points in both. The scoring gap followed the same arc: home teams outscored visitors by about 3 points per 100 possessions through the mid-2010s, and about 2 today, a drop of more than a third. Two moments stand out along the way, in the mid-1990s and again around 2018, though methods that count the bends rather than date one are less sure a single change of pace is enough. The 2018 moment is the three-point era arriving; the mid-1990s is the only era boundary that still shows a one-time drop once the trend is removed, about 2.6 percentage points off the home win rate when hand-checking was banned, on top of the otherwise steady drift. Home court advantage in the playoffs declined later than in the regular season: playoff home win rates held near 64% from the mid-1990s through 2017 while the regular season had already taken its first drop, then fell to about 58% in the past few seasons. That playoff fall benefits the underdog: a weaker team hosting, which once won 65–66% of its home games, now wins about 49%, while the top seeds slipped only modestly. The per-game advantage is still real: the home team wins the early games at the top seed’s arena and even takes most Game 7s. But a best-of-7 series flattens it. Feed the regular-season home edge through a best-of-7 simulation and a team that would have won the series about 55% of the time in the 1980s now takes it about 52% of the time, barely better than a coin flip. 2. What Creates Home Court Advantage, and What Changed
So which piece gave way? Shooting is the largest piece of home court advantage, but it is not the largest driver of its decline: rebounding is, on the straight-line breakdown, close enough to turnovers that re-drawing the seasons hands the title to turnovers about 21% of the time. The table holds both facts at once: what each factor contributes to the advantage, averaged across the whole 43-season record, and how much of the 40-year decline it explains.

Only two real-world changes can be traced directly in the data: a home whistle that measurably evened out, and the shift to three-point shooting. The home whistle itself was nearly universal: of the 47 officials with at least 50 playoff games on record, 45 called fewer fouls on the home team. And it has been evening out: across the regular season, home teams once attempted about 2 more free throws per game than visitors, and now the gap is about 0.5. The 1994–95 hand-checking crackdown is the only rule change tested against the foul gap, and it is the one that shows an immediate shift.
Two extra free throws a night sounds too small to matter, and on any single night it is. Most games aren’t close, so the edge only has to tip the minority that are, and that is enough to bend a season’s win rate.
The three-point shift reaches further. It accounts for the entire shooting decline and about half of both the foul and turnover declines: close to half the 40-year total on its own. That makes it the biggest single real-world force, though still not the engine behind the whole decline. Each change has its own article: The Whistle and The Three-Point Suspect.
So the biggest real-world force and the biggest single factor are two different things: the three-point shift changed the most in the real world, but rebounding is the largest driver of the decline on the stat sheet, and it is the piece the three-point story barely touches. In games with similar three-point rates, the shooting advantage’s decline disappears, while the rebounding advantage keeps fading anyway. The clearest signal is each team’s share of available offensive rebounds, and there the home rate fell about 8 points while the away rate fell about 5: home teams no longer crash the offensive boards more aggressively than visitors. The data shows the home rebounding advantage shrank; it cannot say why.
Turnovers faded over the same span: home teams once committed slightly fewer turnovers than visitors, and that gap is now essentially zero. About half of that fade is the perimeter shift (fewer drives, fewer live-ball turnovers); the other half has no clear explanation. The playoffs point the same way on both counts, though with so few games the turnover fade there isn’t established at all. Rebounding and turnovers share an article: The Mystery on the Glass.
The home edges on the glass and in turnovers have already fallen to near zero, alongside a three-point attempt rate that has climbed to about 40% of all shots.
To test how strong these statistical statements are, I built a test that used only part of the data to predict the rest. Built on the four factors, trained only on seasons through 2013 and then left unchanged, it predicts the later regular-season home win rates to within about a point on average, and beats both baselines in the playoffs too, though there its predicted level runs a bit high across the held-out seasons.
The playoff picture has the same shape, but a larger share of its decline falls outside the four factors. With so few playoff games, where that remainder goes can’t be pinned down, and it is not explained by higher and lower seeds becoming more evenly matched.
3. What Didn’t Drive the Change
Travel distance, time zones, pace of play, and every rule change except 1994–95 each have effects too small or too inconsistent to bend a 40-year trend. Competitive balance can’t explain the long-run decline either, though year to year the two do move together slightly, and in the direction opposite to the usual hunch. The 2014 playoff format change didn’t move the playoff decline. Rest matters on a given night, but that gap hasn’t shifted across eras, and fewer back-to-backs for tired visitors explains only about 8% of the decline.
Even crowd size misses. Arenas have stayed near their fullest on record across the 27 years with gate figures, even in the recent seasons when home court advantage sat at its lowest. A live crowd is still a real ingredient: empty 2020–21 arenas dropped home teams to about 51%, and any crowd at all restored about 58.5%. Are These Good Conclusions?
These findings held up under a battery of checks built to break them. Every number comes from the official NBA game logs for each regular-season and playoff game since 1983-84, public data on NBA.com that anyone can re-pull, plus attendance records from Basketball-Reference. The checks have their own article: How I Know This Isn’t Made Up. Because there are more regular-season games, the analysis is more precise; the playoff figures show direction more than exact size.
